I took a linguistics class in college, and we were asked to survey people of different backgrounds, economic status, etc. One of the questions was- "What do you call the first and last piece of bread in a loaf?"

The majority of native Texans referred to these pieces as the 'heel', but others called them the 'ends' or 'butt'.

I'm curious to find out what other people call them.

In Ohio, I heard "heel" and "end" in about equal amounts. "Butt" was, perhaps, a bit too unappetizing a term to catch on Wink

Here in Minnesota, in my family at least, we always called them butts, and I never liked eating them.
