I'm often irked to see superfluous apostrophes used in public places like the grocery store (Banana's) or mailboxes (The Johnson's). Last year, a couple of unemployed recent college graduates embarked on a months-long trip across the U.S., correcting errant grammar, punctuation, and spelling on signs they encountered. It was featured in a number of news articles. Finally, they got into trouble when the "defaced" a historical marker by adding an apostrophe which the original pioneers had omitted.

The latest grenade to be thrown in the ongoing Grammar Wars come with this development in England:
